I started thinking I got depressed because of my situation then realised I part of my problem is that I was already quite a stressed person due to my child-hood.. Once I did lots of yoga and got rid of many of the effects of past trauma my current 'trauma' became much easier to cope with.
I couldnt change outside events so much but I could change the way I processed them.
I also came to see that my child-hood trauma was not so bad compared to what a lot of people go through and it was humbling to realise just how sorry I had felt for myself when my problems weren't that bad. It is amazing to meet people in the Kundlaini Yoga world who are healing themselves from terrible trauma's - it's such a slow process and takes so much work but it is possible.

Indeed. I have a friend who got depressed through unemployment, Went on SSRI's to stabilise herself went on a training course got a job and went off the drug and is just fine. It can work.
I am sure once people are really badly messed up and or suicidal drugs may help the in the immediate crisis.

It's impossible to understand if you haven't been through it.
I have a theory that depression is a 'whole system' state - if you are a different sort of person from the dominant ones in the tribe you can be perceived as a threat. Your attemps to get on undermine or upset the groups values - this may make them hate and want to hurt you. When depressed you are made powerless by you own system adjusting itself. That way the group won't harm or kill you so you survive and aren't exiled. So the whole point of depression was it was a survival mechanism that allows us to have many types of people living together. If the situaiton changes you may then become dominant ant the others depressed.
Unfortunately like so many of out reactions we live in a very different world from that in which they evolved.

A good approach I think - we have to search and try things to help oursleves. Best of luck and I hope you find the rewards you deserve,
Keith.
