[Kundalini Yoga] The Pranic Body...Breath (made less abstract by Shiv Charan Singh)

The Pranic Body is our link to the infinite flow of energy. It is a link
and the power that it brings with it is not a possession. Abundance is
about access to the flow of life and energy, not the gathering of it in
any static form. Misunderstanding leads to battles of power when people
struggle for a little bit more from each other's limited energy supply
instead of working on making the infinite link. Imbalance in relation to
prana can lead to things like water retention, force and abused
authority, refusal to acknowledge natural authority or tendency to live
life in dream time instead of here on earth. A balanced flow of prana
expresses itself in cleanliness and purity of mind, body, and the world
around, otherwise there could be obsessions with cleanliness or an
abandoned chaos.

Prana is the infinite vital force of the organic world. As plants
breathe out oxygen we inhale it and through this dimension we experience
cleansing and recharging. Prana is the same as chi or qi, the energy
that runs through the meridian channels of the body. It is infinite and
through its flow we can experience the relationship of our finite
consciousness to the infinite one. This, however, could
result in a very dreamy and spaced out state and transcendent and
ascensionist thinking might be used as a way to ignore the shadow and
fly too high (though this is not a reason to never fly). Dreaming of
high and mighty ideals without the know-how or practical wisdom will
turn the imagination into another means of escapism. Step by step and
breath by breath, keeping the feet on the ground with the head looking
both below and above the clouds is the balance between the Pranic Body
and the other dimensions. But when the pranic force dominates our
consciousness so that we only see above the clouds, sensing the
infinite, then we develop a very serious approach to life. Our outlook
may become fatalistic since we perceive the inevitable death of all
finite things.

Asthmatic breathing is one of the difficulties that can result from bad
experiences with power and the abuse of power. Prana is power and in
itself it is pure and unqualified until it enters into relationship with
other forces. Power possesses though we like to think we are in control
but it has its own existence and runs through us like water. We can swim
in it if its immensity and chaos does not drown us and of itself it is
neither good nor bad; it is only our manipulations that make it
otherwise. It can be used either way and is like the fuel in a petrol
tank of a vehicle, which may take someone to hospital or carry stolen
goods. Obviously, people in authority are often involved in the use and
abuse of power but, in fact. we all are in some way. Depending on how we
experience our own Pranic Body, we will enter into confrontational or
co-operative relationships with those who hold positions of authority
whether they are real or superficial.

Pranic power has a lot to do with healing and dying and when we realize
that we begin to respect it more. It is a force for purification and
cleansing so where there is a lack sickness will follow and an absolute
deprivation would result in death by sickness. An increase of pranic
flow would bring about the death of whatever was causing the illness but
too much makes us very serious, which in turn could leave us obsessed
with cleanliness and purification. It is, therefore, important to learn
how to regulate this vital force, just as we might turn a tap to control
the flow of water.

Living near Boston these last 22 years has been interesting. Before
moving here I lived in Fairbanks, AK for 12 years. Yogiji would say he
liked Alaska because the "people had prana". That has been the source of
no small amount of wondering, on my part.
Of the top six states in levels of Asthma, 5 of them are New England
states. In this case, it has very little to do with air pollution and
more to do with old patterns of *holding* that are passed from
generation to generation....
From the Yogic perspective Asthma is an issue of Apana being
imbalanced and residing higher up in the body than it is supposed to.
Apana, when it is in the lungs, makes it hard to take in the breath and
receive Prana. Things that make say 'hmmmmm....'.
