[Kundalini Yoga] Re: Cleaning and Caring for HAND-SELECTED GONG

Sat Nam ji, I'm into supporting the local vendor on just about any product even if it is a little bit more, but a gong or a singing bowl is very personal. These are handmade and they naturally vary from piece to piece. Most gongs will end up in the hands of a rock band or an orchestra or a marching band. They are played for a few seconds and then that's it. DONE! Almost any gong can do that.
The gong that a sound worker or Yogi wants has got to have longer sustain, harmonics you can feel and that overtones should make you go 'wow!'.
One can always get 'lucky' by simply ordering online or off a shelf somewhere. One can get very unlucky, as well. A gong can be ringy or the 'tight' or simply not exciting.

Hand-Selection is best. That's what we do. The small added expense of $60 (the usual fee) is well worth it, when you consider how much you're spending.

Thank you very much for this helpful information.  I apologize for taking so long to reply - I'm busy running a business, and today is finally a time to catch-up on personal stuff.

You're absolutely right - WHY didn't we get a gong through you.  I guess I thought the shipping would be expensive from New York.  Just assumptions.

If you hand-select gongs, does that mean some Paiste gongs are inferior in some way?  I hope the one we got is a good one.  We bought it from a Local retailer.  But I have heard that quality control went downhill for a time, with increased demand.  Just rumors perhaps.

I am receiving your posts on FB and am looking forward to sitting down and watching some of the recent videos posted.

Thanks again for your time Dharam.

Happy Holidays!

Once a year is plenty, if even that, if you keep it clean.
Question: why didn't you get your gong through Gong Songs? We hand select from the largest retail stock in the world - this not a joke!

First rule: NEVER TOUCH YOUR GONG WITH BARE HANDS OR FINGERS!!

Don't over-clean your gong! Once a year is plenty as long as you are not exposing it to all kinds of filth. What I would recommend for folks living near the ocean (airborne salt) is to wash it every couple of months, maybe, with a light soapy solution. DON"T NOT SCRUB! Rinse off thoroughly and then towel dry. Any clean cotton towel is fine. If you don't towel dry there will be water spots.

For the yearly cleaning, and this is may not be necessary, use either of the below procedures:

Goddard's Silver Polish is a great one step maintenance approach. If that doesn't get you the stellar results you'd like it probably because the surface may be forever etched by the acids that are in skin oils (DON'T LET ANYONE TOUCH YOUR GONG WITH BARE HANDS!)

OR

This level of cleaning is only advisable once you have tried simply water, and then tried water and mild soap. Always towel dry and NEVER SCRUB! Light pressure only.

here's what you need.....

Precise Instructions at http://www.paiste.com/e/support_usagecare.php?menuid=318

Cleaning a Gong with the Paiste
Cymbal Cleaner & Protector

First lay the
Gong on a table covered with a smooth carpet or cloth surface. Next wet the Gong with water and also wet a cotton cloth with water. Squirt a few drops of Paiste Cymbal Cleaner onto the cloth (not onto the Gong directly) and make sure the cleaner is well watered-down. With the cloth, gently wipe the Gong in the direction of the lathing grooves until you see dirt being removed from the surface. Do not rub at all! As soon as you see dirt or grime on the rag, stop the cleaning process. Rinse off the Gong with a different wet cloth until the cleaner is completely removed. You can also rinse the Gong directly under running luke warm water instead. When the cleaner is completely removed, use a new dry cloth and gently wipe around the Gong until it's completely dry. Again, never rub! After completing the cleaning instructions, pour a small portion of Paiste Cymbal Protector on a clean dry cloth and gently wipe along the grooves of the Gong. The protector serves as a temporary coating and prevents the bronze surface from oxidizing. Your newly cleaned and protected cymbals will be worth the effort!

Caution, used this ONLY on Paiste Gongs and cymbals.

Vibrational Blessings,
Dharam

[Kundalini Yoga] Re: New Member, Looking to Learn about KY and Meditation

Hi Shana,

I speak from my personal experience not from being a senior K yoga teacher....I agree with Guru Rattana - get straight into doing a kriya. I had a depressing period in life and became depressed and suffered from RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury). I got quite happy & cured my RSI while all the bad stuff was still going on. That was from doing 40 day kriyas. It took 6 months to a year of doing 1 to 1 1/2 hours of tough K yoga kriyas every day so it was a long amazing liberating slog! But thanks to K yoga I could do it at home alone. Our emotions are really tied up with the state of our body and like mine was (and is still but less so!) your body probably has many tense areas of muscle some of which will be tender if poked. I worked on these areas to get sensation in them - to bring them 'back to life'.Be ready for some emotional stuff to come up! If you let it flow and realise it is the unhappiness from your past being released and nothing to be afraid of or alarmed by you'll be OK. Not saying it def. will but for some people it does and it puts them off carrying on.    If you have plenty of time, discipline and toughness start full length otherwise scale down the times proprotionally to get yourself going. It is better to do 3/2 (or even 1/2/ length) than not do it at all.  > ... I became dizzy, and I had to slow the pace down or rest during some of the techniques. That's the right thing to do. >  But I did smile a few timesI wonder how many people smiled like I did when I read that. > The teacher said KY should not be taken seriously! It's a seriously wonderful thing - but you can have a laugh about it too.  >  The online class recommends that the student should at least to try silent meditation > on it's own for 40 days straight, then move on in the class. We have yoga because very few people 'wake up' just doing sitting meditation. We have K yoga kriyas to wake you up faster. Make the most of them! >  I've been doing the silent meditation for 3 days, but it's hard to stay with, because I don't know > what I'm supposed to be doingThat is the normal experience! Doing kriyas will eventually wake you up to what is supposed to happen.  > I would like to move onto the "Tuning In" mantra. I don't want to do it wrong, though. Do it as you do in your class? Do it any old way and get more refined as you learn more. Not doing anything for fear of doing it wrong is WRONG!Wahe Guru Kriya was a good starting one for me, otherwise try one that gets a big effect on you in class. The meditations are great but I found they were only great once I had 'paid my dues' and changed a certain amount from the kriyas. But we are not all the same so if one of them has a big effect in class maybe to it for 40 days. I so hope you can get benefits like I did, it's your birthright, but somehow it's hard to keep it going. It worked for me because I was so desperate and could see a way out from my suffering but there were so many times it seemed like I was chasing a silly hope. For me the big lesson was to just follow the instructions and learn from how your system changes and what you feel. You find your own balance between working hard to get faster change and being gentle on yourself. Also be still and aware of your breath and focus inside when you rest between actions - that is so important - a mistake I made was to not listen to that advice.     wishing you a great journey...Keith

Seems like anywhere anything leaves the body there is a system that will dump toxins into what is leaving!   > and some irritability That's probably K yoga doing it's magic - releasing repressed emotion. K yoga works faster than most other things and more of the repressed emotion surfaces to consciousness as it is released.Keith.

Re: [Kundalini Yoga] The role of a guru

Dear Brian,

Sat Nam!

On the Kundalini Yoga path, our ultimate guru is our connection with the Divine, the inner guidance that we get from being tuned into the 'cosmic' channel and our soul.
Yogi Bhajan did not set himself up to be this 'guru' because he was not that. He was a teacher who offered us technology so that we could awaken to this experience ourselves.

'Guru' in terms of the 10 Sikh Gurus are humans who serve as examples of the consciousness that we can achieve.
Then the tenth Guru Gobind Singh said  - no more bowing to other humans -- here is a compilation of writing of humans who have achieved higher consciousness -- The Siri Guru Granth Sahib.
When you read it you can get connected, so it can be your 'Guru.'

There are other holy books that are also 'Gurus.'

Choose a mantra and make it your guru.

And as far as Yogi Bhajan giving some of us the name Guru -- we have to do our best to inspire others to connect with their own inner guru.

Blessings,

Guru Rattana :+)

Do we instead consider our guru to be the 10 Sikh Gurus (Guru Ram Das, etc.)? The Siri Guru Granth Sahib?

On a related note, who was Sant Hazara Singh's Guru? Because I think I met him yesterday!

Then you tell us :+)

[Kundalini Yoga] Re: Metallic Taste

I can not say for sure what is causing the metallic taste, but it is possible that it brain chemicals being released during practice.

Check out http://metatoninresearch.org for some insights:  search the word metallic.

If this is it Basically, don't worry abut it.  It is a side effect of your practice and actually sought after by meditators.

Curiously, the same effect is being had by people applying electrical current directly to their head to improve brain function.

Interesting piece on Radio Lab about this:  http://www.radiolab.org/story/9-volt-nirvana/

be well, Tom

[Kundalini Yoga] Too Much Energy (Too Hyped Up) After Doing KY

Hi Forum Members,

After doing Kundalini yoga and KY meditations I usually feel like a big wave of energy is going through my body, and it lasts for at least a day. Usually it feels like my heart's beating fast, like I feel overwhelmed with too much energy, almost to where I feel my hands shaking. It feels like a huge surge in energy. This can be overwhelming feeling and not a welcoming feeling, because I don't like feeling too much energy in my body. I wil cut down doing KY for every other day, or maybe less. I know certain KY meditations are meant to increase your energy. Last night, I tried doing a few KY meditations I saw on youtube.com and now I again feel too energized.

My question- Is this energy surge (after doing KY) normal, and should I cut down on doing KY? It's not a comfortable energy surge; it's way too much energy. I don't drink coffee b/c I can't handle caffeine. I was trying to do it every day. Right now, for example, my hands are shaking a little bit as I type. Are there techniques or things I can do to lower this uncomfortable energy surge I usually get after doing KY?

Thanks Again,

Shana
