I, too, live in a very remote area and know of your quest for something - anything - as an alternative to dial-up! I think I may have recently discovered the Holy Grail of rural broadband - if you have cellphone coverage in your area, have a USB port on your computer, only want to have one computer online at a time, and would like to dump your dial-up account in favor of a really cool gadget that runs on 1GB cell technology for probably not much more than you're currently paying for your 32Kb service, you might want to take a look at a Wireless USB 760 Modem... they are offered by all the major cell providers.
