[Kundalini Yoga] Kundalini Syndrome

I'm sure this topic has been dealt with, but what's the buzz about the Kundalini Syndrome (I think that's what it's called), some sort of psychotic state induced by practicing Kundalini meditation and/or yoga? My guess is that it may exist in some form, but that familiarity with yoga and or eastern spirituality may help to offset this problem? Why did Carl Jung mention it? He seemed very enlightened to me, so I was surprised that this syndrome was partially attributed to C.G. Jung. I've also heard that even so-called enlightened people have experienced this problem. Can someone clarify? One other question. Is it really necessary to have a teacher in order to study Kundalini? There are none available here!! No big cities nearby!
