[Kundalini Yoga] correct way to breathe for any excercise

SatNam to all practitioners and members,

I recently was listening to an audiobook on meditation and calming the mind.
It clearly mentioned that the correct way to breathe while meditating or yoga would be to Expand the stomach and take the Chest Inwards and expand the chest while breathing out .....this knwn as Diaphragm breathing against the conventional method of expansion of chest while inhaling and stomach expansion while exhaling.

Now my question is whether I should adopt this pattern of breathing for practicing casual breathing exercises and at all times or only for certain excercises as mentioned in the audiobook.
Also I would be grateful if someone can explain the 2 methods and the effects on the body with scientific analogies .
If this is a very basic question, please spare my ignorance as I have been trying to practise yoga without a guru.
All comments are welcome
Thanks
