I've also noticed a similar effect. I used to study voice with a coach and he had me do many physical exercises that expand and strengthen the abdominals and the breathing apparatus. Some of the exercises I now recognize in retrospect as developing pranayama. I've noticed that asanas and kriyas that particularly work the naval, lift the chest and stretch the spine upward are very good for voice production and support.
After 5-7 minutes of Sat Kriya I can belt it out like Pavorotti!
