Re: [Kundalini Yoga] Re: I am starting a set on July 1, would anyone like to join me?

Kartar-
thank you so much for putting this out for me to participate in.
I intend to make a 40 day commitment to this.

wonderful that so many people will be doing this!
The question re how long - Yogi Bhajan says it takes 40 days to change a habit, so we aim to do the set for 40 days and not miss a day.
However, if you do miss, do not get discouraged and quit, just start again.
The question re describe the set-
It is called "Spinal Energy set" and I have a hard copy from 1999! I don't know how to use my scanner.

But if you go to Guru Rattana's site -
http://www.kundaliniyoga.org/spinal.html
The spinal energy set here is very similar.

I don't know if everyone knows that Guru Rattana is one of the founders and sponsors of this list, and a great yogi.

She offers a whole course in Kundalini Yoga at this web site:
http://www.yogatech.com/go/htmlos.cgi/grol/grol_play.html#flash_anchor

I am going to start with my tried and true and familiar set. And then I will try some of her classes.

I start with 2 minutes each, and then increase gradually to 3.

Welcome everybody to class. :)
I am so inspired.
Kundalini Yoga is the best thing in the world for me. Last year I finally got in the habit of doing it every morning at 4 am, and I felt great. --then...I had blood sugar issues, or adrenal issues, not sure which, but I could no longer do it on an empty stomach, and I stopped. As I said July 1 is my first day of no work, so I will rise, eat, wait one hour, and do yoga.

If you are able to and wish to, Yogi Bhajan says, and my experience confirms this, it is very special to do the set before the dawn, or as early as possible.

Remember to tune in.
Be sure to rest between kriyas and long rest at the end.
If you have any questions feel free to ask. I am not a certified teacher, but have been doing kundalini yoga off and on for 30 years.

I am looking forward to starting with you all!

sat nam,
Kartar Kaur

Re: [Kundalini Yoga] Re: strech pose - go beyong 3 minutes?

Sat Nam,

It is permissible to do stretch pose 5-7 minutes. However, permissible
is not necessarily reasonable or a good idea. If your abdominal and back
muscles are very strong, you can easily maintain the posture, and get a
charge out of longer times, bravo. Few people have the physical capacity
to do stretch pose without strain for even 1-2 minutes.

Many people should be strengthening their abdominal muscles before they
even try to do stretch pose.

I teach my students to do one leg at a time until they are strong enough
to do both legs. One leg at a time does create an alignment and is much
better than not doing the exercise at all.

The goal of stretch pose is to align the navel center and it is perhaps
the most powerful KY exercise to do so. Sat Kriya and breath of fire
run a close second and do not cause any stress or strain. Leg lifts are
good too but need the same precautions.

Choose a combination of navel and abdominal strengthening exercises for
your daily routine. Check your navel to see if there is a strong pulse.
When there is you are set for the day.

Blessings,

Guru Rattana :+)

RE: [Kundalini Yoga] Re: strech pose - go beyong 3 minutes?

Sat Nam, Stretch pose with possibly hand palm down under hips/buttocks helps
(so just head is lifted with feet, but not arms) or even bending the knees
and bringing the feet a little higher off the ground. And, of course, start
slowly -- 15 seconds or so at first and build up your strength. IMHO.

Hello,
I would be cautious with stretch pose because my teacher told me that if
done wrong, it can hurt your back.
Perhaps if you do a search you can find out more.
I stopped doing it after she told me many things one had to watch for. If I
can find what she sent me, I will post.

That is wonderful that you are helping people reduce or eliminate pain
medication.
I am inspired reading your story. Thank you.
Even tho I am 64 years old, I still would love to become a teacher.
I think Kundalini Yoga is the best for mental or physical pain, as well as
just to increase joy in one's life.

Good for you to be a beacon in your land.

Re: [Kundalini Yoga] I am starting a set on July 1, would anyone like to join me?

Hello,
that's a beautiful quote. Thank you.
I also think setting reachable goals is important.
That is why when I am beginning again after a long time of not, I pick a set which I know I can do, it does not contain 46 frog poses, for example. lol

And my goal is to complete the set every day, altho if I am inclined, I will add chanting to the Sadhana tape.

Best to you in your set and your practice.
