Re: [Kundalini Yoga] Yuni Kriya and Shabd Kriya

Sat Nam Adi Singh and Devinder Singh
and thank you for your help.
I ended up finding the reference to Dr. Shannahof-Khalsa and could see the photograph. The troubling thing is I have a book called Praana, Praanee, Praanayam where the illustration of this mudra is very different, showing the base of the hands quite separate and the lines from tip of little finger/thumb of one hand not touching those of the other hand.
But from the explanations it is clear that the right mudra is the one photographed in Dr. Shannahof-Khalsa's book. Also the other mudra does not form a yoni at all, making the title of the kriya pointless.

I had another surprise looking at this book : on the preceding page it shows the mudra for Shabd Kriya and I notice that it is different from the illustrations of this mudra found in most books. Dr. Shannahof-Khalsa shows the thumbs pointing forward while most books show the thumbs touching at the tips but in a straight line towards each other in a kind of Buddhist mudra. I think he is right on this one too because it fits the words of the description.
I have a question here : generally in this position right hand on top is for men, whilst left hand on top is for women. It is not specified here that the mudra should be changed according to the gender.
The similar Buddhist mudra says left hand on top for both sexes, but when Tibetans do it, it is right hand on top, at least for men, I do not know for women. I suppose this is a Tantric practice to reverse the flow. And that KY being a Tantric discipline, we follow the Tibetan style.
Any idea from experts?

Lots of good wishes and love to all!
Kalliopi

Yuni Kriya is described/taught by Dr. Shannahof-Khalsa in his book "Kundalini Yoga Meditation: Techniques specific for psychiatric disorders, Couples Therapy, and Personal Growth. It is also described in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2004. It was taught by Yogi Bhajan in 1974.

It has three important parts, the eyes-on-tip- of the nose, the mudra and the breathing. It comes with a strong recommendation not to exceed eleven minutes. I assume you know the Kriya and only need a description of the mudra, if I understood your question correctly.

The key with the mudra is to keep your elbows relaxed against your body and the hands in front of the solar plexus about a foot away from the body. Now, this is how I do the mudra so it does not get complicated. Hopefully it will help you without the need of an illustration.

Bring your palms together, elbows relaxed along the side of your body, and move your hands one foot towards the front of your body (solar plexus area). Your hands are together like in prayer mudra and pointing directly away from you. Now, bring your thumbs up pointing towards the sky, still together. Now, bring your index-middle- ring fingers, still together, in a bundle, up and away from the little fingers. You should now have the thumbs, together, pointing straight up, your index-middle- ring fingers together in a bundle but separated from the thumbs and little fingers. Both hands still touching each other. Now, bring the index-middle- ring fingers, as a bundle, still together in each hand, but open them sixty degrees where the three ones from the right hand move towards the right away from the bundle in the left hand, and the three ones from the left hand move towards the left and away from those from the right. The only part of your
right and left hand that should be touching each other is the line along your little fingers down to the base of the hand (wrist) and up the thumbs. The palms don´t touch. Nothing else. The three middle fingers in each hand are toughing each other but apart from those of the other hand. Like a cave. If it helps, get two rubber bands and put the around the index-middle- ring fingers of each hand. Now you can see. Just bring the two bundles sixty degrees apart.

Now your are read for the Kriya.
The breathing pattern is unique, especially the position of the lips during inhalation.

Best to you.

Sat Nam
Adi Singh

I have heard of Yuni Kriya to help with insomnia and to powerfully relax.
Is there a book where it is described with an illustration? This is the crucial part as I do not understand the mudra.
I do not find it in the books of Gururattana, maybe I missed it?
I would be grateful for your help.

Re: [Kundalini Yoga] meditation recommendation

Sat Nam Adi Singh,
Thank you tremendously for the kind words, suggestions, and reminders. I heard my inner Guru speak for the first time today. It said stop fighting. Stop fighting. Then, I read this post. :) My heart filled with joy. I've been fighting my whole life through everything I do instead of taking in the moment. I've been so bent on doing things "right" or proper. Being authentic or by the book. With Kundalini and having no personal in person teacher, it has been easy to really get caught up in that. Then, I heard my Guru. I read your post and it reinforced what I had already realized, that God has provided me with the perfect time for meditation and that my meditation can be practically anything and still be a true Kundalini meditation. Thank you. And being reminded that the little beings I am caring for were known by God and chose me before their birth into human bodies is something I needed. They chose me for a reason, and I chose to be a mother. It is the path that God had in store for me.

Now, onward to learning more about what is "real" Kundalini yoga and trying not to get too caught up in having to do certain things for myself to see any benefit.

Be blessed,
Kelli

Yes, wondering if one is doing it right is common at the beginning of practice. It will ease with time. I used to worry if I was doing the right exercises for me, because it seemed that I needed them all, and it was confusing which ones to start with. Y.B. said that if he could only give us one Kriya, it would be Sat Kryia. So, I did that. Then I went to some local classes, and I asked the teacher there how I could best get the kundalini current to rise in me. She told me the Kirtan Kriya. So now, I am doing both for a 40 day period. The thing about these exercises is that we may not feel something right away, and then again, we may feel it only once, and then not again for a long time. I guess what I am saying (and have been told) is that the experience is so individual, that we simply can not compare one to another, and we must trust that what we need, is evolving within us. Trust in spirit to guide us, (if a teacher can not be found)and we will eventually be clear as to which exercises to do right now, as all of our questions are answered by spirit in due time. I congratulate you on having felt the effects of your practice. There will be more and greater. Trust in yourself and in spirit - you will find the way - but maybe not everything right now, this minute - it takes time, but you are on the right path, and doing the right thing. You will figure it all out perfectly in due time.

Re: [Kundalini Yoga] meditation recommendation

Sat Nam Kelli

You are there!  We try too hard.  We try so much.  If we only knew we are there.  We talk so much about opening chakras.  The chakras are constantly flowing.  They are there, open, we just need to become aware.  We try so much to meditate, to see the light, when meditation is there, the light is there.  To sit and rock your baby or to lie down on bed by her side...what a blessing!  Think about it.  What a meditation!  Or better yet, don´t think about it.  You are already doing a meditation that follows your Soul´s intention.  Just don´t think about what you should be doing.  While rocking your daughter (remember her Soul chose you) just tell yourself, or better yet, tell her that She is Your Meditation. Live in that precious moment, that blessed present moment, You and Her.  Remember, in her reality, She is You, all the way until she is around 18 months old.  So you should feel, in your reality, You are She.

Isn´t what the real meaning of the mantra God and Me, Me and God are One is?

Wahe Guru!!!

But if you want some recommendations here are some:  You may do Yogic Breathing, Long Deep Breathing for a few minutes then Naadi Cleansing for a few, then just chant from your Navel and Heart Centers, any mantra.  What to chant for 30 to 60 minutes?  Wahe Guru.  Choose your Mantra, or better yet, allow Guru to choose.  Even better, allow your daughter to choose it for both of You as One.

My Friend, You are there.  Blessed be You and your Daughter.  There are millions in this planet that wish they had your blessing.

Yogi Bhajan said: "You are a woman because you are a balance between heaven and earth and you are the only balance."  " That you can give birth to a saint, you can be a saint yourself, you can serve a saint, you can marry a saint, you can da da da da da-those are qualifications, possibilities, chances.  The why you are a woman is because you are the only balance.  Creative balance between heaven and earth.  Have you ever thought that way?"

A beautifull blessing prayer he taught was:

"Bless me, bless me, bless me, Oh Great One.  In that One I may find myself, my environments, my totality and my reality.  The moon and the sun, the hemisphere, the atmosphere, all within me that of all the universes be Thy grace guide me to my fulfillment, gratefulness and happiness."

Sat Nam
Blessings

I must apologize if my frequent posting for advice is a bother. I sure hope it isn't. I have tried to commit to 40 days of a meditation. I chose one where you apply the root lock and repeat God and me, me and God are one with every inhale and exhale. Hands are in a mudra, but I don't know the name of it.

Anyway, yesterday was to be my 4th day. I have been doing the meditation at night before bed. By evening, I was sick with a headache and in bed. I completely forgot about the meditating. Now, I must start over with the 40 days. So, I was thinking that the meditation I chose wasn't a good one for that purpose anyway, I can't apply the root lock during my cycle, so that would knock me out of the 40 days. I'm also thinking that I need to start simple.

At night, I have about 30min.-1hr. where I am either rocking my baby sitting in easy pose on the bed and her in my arms, or I'm laying beside her as she falls asleep. I have to do this every night whether or not I'm sick, tired, whatever. This would be the perfect time to meditate. Is there a meditation that I could do while rocking my baby or laying down with her? I'm working on acceptance and being in the moment instead of constantly trying to push passed it, so something fitting for that would be great.

Thanks so much.
Kelli
